I just bought one of these because I am a surveyor and figured it was a device for using the sun and stars for navigation based on my inspection. However, your information not only confirmed I was correct, but added so much more with regards to history, usage, and even the manual!!! Thank you so much for posting this information on this unique piece of scientific equipment. Interesting that it is still in use in some places today, although I would imagine that GPS has mostly replaced it. Thank you again for the information and for making the scanned manual available.

Yes, a very sad piece of news. John was instrumental in our move for New Zealand from the UK. His story of how he was in Auckland working on the museum's Spitfire exhibit when he encountered a member of the Government and was granted Permanent Residence inspired me to go ahead and try for the impossible. While I was here doing just that, he passed away. I'm very sorry to have missed the opportunity to tell him about the hope he'd given us, to improve our lives so much.
What a lovely man, and a 'Good Bastard' as we'd say in New Zealand! His calming, peaceful demeanour on the radio was infectious. If you can be happy in your own skin, as he was, then you never fear for the future. He passed on that feeling to us very well. Unforgettable.
See you next time around, mate.

Thanks for the info on what this thing is! I've had one for a couple of years now and always had fun showing it and guessing what it might be with friends.as soon as I found out what it was I had to find more info on it and your manual was perfect-Thank you for sharing it!

What an excellent blog Mike, I really enjoyed reading it and seeing the pictures. The black and white shots added some atmosphere making you think of arctic explorer's of the past.

I have to confess to being a little saddened at the use of twin otters as your means of transport, poor little things.... could you not have imported a couple of polar bears?

All joking aside its good to hear from you and learn a little of both your job and amateur activity.

Our first major contest is on March 6th and 7th, the 48hr International DX Contest.

Keep the blogs and pics running as you have time, I miss your enthusiasm and commitment to the group and look forward to seeing you in person again once you've finished enjoying yourself.

I live in Northern California, and a friend just found - and bought - an Astro Compass Mk-II at a church yard sale. He isn't interested in computers and the internet, so he asked me to look for information about it. I thoroughly enjoyed the search. Your article is the best of all I found.

I'm a civil engineer, so I had a couple of surveying classes in college. I assumed he was describing a theodolite. I was close.

My buddy Bob is a retired telecommunications engineer, and loves mechanical things. We'll enjoy trying to come up with ways to actually use it.

good to hear about your participation in the Contest and happy to know you are enjoying Radio activity from down South.
I don't know if you have ever visited WAP (Worldwide Antarctic Program) web site at www.waponline.it but that is a good place if you wish to leave some information about further activity. As you know, there is a large number of Hams WW that are enjoying working Antarctic Station and for you, being at Rothera Base (WAP GBR-12)could be a great opportunity to give them a new contact.
I'm just asking if you will have a chance to visit Lagoon Island Refuge, which is a place not too far away Rothera. That will be a "New One" for the Antarctic Chasers as this place is not referenced yet.
If you wish to download and print the WAP-WADA Directory (which contains all the Antarctic & Sub-Antarctic settlements divided by Country) you can do it from the Homepage of WAP site.
Enjoy your Antarctic long winter and hope to hear you soon.

Hello Mike,

What a fantastic report and such a unique shack and vista available to you as you clocked up the contacts over the weekend.

As always your photograph's are fantastic and lovely to see.

Its good to see you making the most of whats left of the summer out there on the ski's etc.

As you will know we took part in the contest and managed to keep our antenna's up unlike the same contest and "The great storm of 2009"

Were just coming into spring in the UK and the snowdrops and bluebells are in full bloom and lift the spirit after what many may have seen as a period of doom and gloom, especially in places like Cumbria who suffered serious flooding at the end of 2009 closely followed by heavy snow to add insult to injury.

The big debate on the local news is "whats happened to the Daff's normally in full bloom at this time of year, but don't worry were assured they will be in bloom by Easter.

I look forward to your next posting.
